Interviewing Author Deb Hockenberry

Q1. Tell me about yourself?

A. Hi! I’m Deb Hockenberry and I’ve been interested in and telling children’s stories since I was a kid. I come from a large family and live in Central Pennsylvania where I share an apartment with my cat, Harry. I love to write, of course. Besides that, I love to read, music, and crochet. I’m currently trying to learn to draw. Wish me luck on that!

Q2.What are your favorite books to read?

A. I really don’t have a favorite genre. I’m all over the map when it comes to reading! Of course, I like to read picture books. I also like all ages of children’s books as well as adults books. I’ve even been known to read biographies and reference books!

Q3. When did you decide you were going to write a book?

A. I knew that I wanted to be an author in the 1950s, when I was a child. I took a course in the 1990s to learn to do this properly, and in 2017 I published my debut book, ‘Where Can We Have The Party?’

Q4. How did you come up with the name of your book?

A. Kids want something catchy. So, I really thought hard about this. I learned from the course I took that it should pose a question without giving the end away. The title took a lot of thought on my part.

Q5. What are you working on for 2021

A. I’m working on several things right now. Of course, I have another Hungle Bungle Jungle book in the works with Giraffe and the gang. I have a few other works-in-progress too.

Q6. How long have you been writing?

A. I’ve been telling stories and wanting to write since I was a child. I’ve been actively writing on and off since then, too.

Q7.What advice would you give other authors?

A. Have you ever hear the old cliché’, Never give up? It’s true. Don’t. Also, I have to say that you should join a critique group. You get great advice on improving your story! Also, when you have you book written, hire a professional editor. He or she will find errors that you’ve missed!

Q9. What is your favorite coffee drink?

A. I don’t like coffee so we’ll have to go with tea. I recently tried a flavor of tea that I really fell in love with. It’s called Chai Latte. I really look forward to my morning cup of Chai Latte!

Q10. What is your favorite coffee shop?

A. I don’t think my area has a coffee shop so I’ll have to say my kitchen is my favorite coffee shop.

Q11. Do you plan on making a new book in the future?

A. Oh, sure. Be on the lookout for my next masterpiece!

Q12. How many books have you written?

A. So far, ‘Where Can We Have The Party?’ is my only book.

Q13. Did you go to college to be a writer?

A. Not a brick and mortar one. I did attend The Institute of Children’s Literature in the 1990s. This is where I learned how to write a story properly. It’s a comprehensive online course, now. When I took the course, it was a correspondence course. I did earn college points from taking the course!

I also am taking the ongoing and online children’s writing course from the Children’s Book Institute. This is to help me keep up with the ever-changing world of children’s literature!

I married my high school sweetheart and worked as a hairdresser for ten years. Once insurance became important, I went to work at a bank and the corporate offices of a large fragrance company. After our son was born, I became a stay at home mom. I love reading Christian Contemporary Romance. Q2. Where did the inspiration to write come from? A. There came a time when I couldn’t find anything clean anymore when I was in my early thirties, so I decided to write what I wanted to read. My characters kept praying and talking to God and I realized I was writing Christian romance instead of merely clean. It took me nine and a half years to get published. Q3. How did you come up with the titles of your books? A. I start with a working title that fits the theme of the book. Sometimes, I change it as

A. I’m 61 years of age and was born in the Northern Textile Town of Huddersfield in England where I still live with my partner. I like many genres of books, but I don’t like anything too dark; before I retired I worked for many years in Mental Health Services in the UK, so I had more than my fill of ‘life’, and the ups and downs it can throw at people. So, I tend to go for books that offer escapism, I also like history, autobiographies, and biographies. At the moment I’m enjoying the fictional book ‘The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates. I say I’m retired, but I now consider myself to be an author, I treat it as a full-time job, working on my books for several hours most days. Q2. when did you decide you were going to write a book? A. I retired from my job with the National Health Service in the UK nearly five years ago now; I’d already started my first book by th

I tend to choose books from the same genres that I write… mysteries, historical fiction, fantasy… and I gravitate back to older books more than newer. I like stories that move at a good, steady pace, almost like a well-made film; that isn’t preachy, but still, give you something to think about; and that have well-developed characters that act like real people.  Q2.when did you decide you were going to write a book? I’d been  A.writing screenplays since the early 2000s and I’d gotten some notice for them, but getting into that industry is notoriously difficult and expensive. Then I learned about the rise of indie publishing, KDP and such, and decided to try adapting the stories into novels. Q3. How did you come up with the name of your books?  A. Poetry, songs,
