Interviewing Author Rolanda Pyle

1. Tell me about yourself?
I am a licensed social worker and the author of the books-“Grandma’s Hands”  - a children's storybook,  “Finally” - a collection of inspirational poems; and the compiler of and contributor to “Beneath His Everlasting Wings”, a collection of devotionals.

My work has been published in religious and community newspapers, anthologies, collections, and journals, including the Red Penguin Collection.   In April 2004, New York's Daily News named m one of the "100 Women Who Shape Our City.", because of my work with grandparent caregivers.

I love God, family, friends, church, reading, writing, Broadway plays, music, and sports.  I am a NY Knicks, METS, and Liberty fan.

2.What are your favorite books to read?
The Bible;  Biographies and memoirs- recently enjoyed Cicely Tyson's, "Just as I am", poetry and I like Terri McMillian books.

3. When did you decide you were going to write a book?

I  had written a lot of poetry and someone said to me, why don't you put them together in a book, so I did.
I then compiled the devotional.  But I always wanted to write a children's book for grandchildren being raised by their grandparents.  I had that experience and reading Maya Angelou's, "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", as a young teen helped me to know me and my siblings were not alone in this situation. So I wanted to write a book for children who are younger so that they can know also.

4. How did you come up with the name of your book?
I loved the Bill Withers song, "Grandma's Hands' and it always reminded me of my grandmother.

5. What are you working on for 2022
I am continuously working on my memoir.  I have written many poems and I continue to write poetry.   I have a few stories and articles that I am currently working on and I'm considering another children's storybook.  Probably a continuation to the children's storybook.

6. How long have you been writing?

I started writing in junior high school and took it seriously when my 8th grade  English Teacher Ms. Giskin told me that I have a creative writing ability.   So I have been writing poetry since then and also stories.

7.What advice would you give other authors?

To keep writing and look for opportunities to share.   You never know who needs whatever you are writing.  I believe everyone has a story to share and there is someone who needs it.

8. Where can people find you online?

Twitter: @RolandaPyle

9. What is your favorite coffee drink?
You know what?  I don't drink coffee at all.   I am a tea drinker.  My favorite tea is peppermint.

10. What is your favorite coffee shop?
Although I don't drink coffee, I would say Starbucks because I go there for snacks - love their lemon pound cake.

11. Do you plan on making a new book in the future?

Yes, I am working on my memoir.  So hopefully in the future, I will complete it.

12. How many books have you written?

Three -  a poetry book "Finally", a children's storybook - "Grandma's Hands",  and a devotional collection, "Beneath His Everlasting Wings".

13. Did you go to college to be a writer?
No, I went to college but to become a Social Worker.  I am a licensed Social Worker and have worked in child welfare and for the last 20+ years in aging.
