Interviewing Author Victoria Maldonado

Q1.Please tell me more about yourself.

A. I’m an author of women’s fiction (Hearts Drawn Wyld trilogy as Victoria J. Hyla) and children’s books (Victoria Hyla Maldonado) as well as a smattering of short stories across various genres. I’m a professional freelance editor (Victorious Editing Services) with more than 20 years of experience across multiple industries. I live in the western suburbs of Chicago with my husband, 6-year-old twins, two cats, and a dog.

Q2. What are your favorite books to read?

A. I tend to read women’s fiction/romance with heart and sometimes Christian fiction and a bit of fantasy.

Q3. Do you like coffee or tea?

A. I love them both very much. I usually have coffee in the morning and tea in the evening.

Q4. How many books have you written?

A. I’ve written three novels, four children’s books, and I have several other titles that are collaborative anthologies. I also orchestrated and posthumously published a friend’s poetry collection and wrote the introduction for that.

Q5. Do you have a favorite bookstore?

A. Not really. I wish I did. I really want to find a small indie bookshop to support. I feel that’s lacking in our area at least very close to us. Maybe I’ll do that in my next life.

Q6. Did you go to college for writing?

A. Not specifically. I went to college for English and Education. In that coursework, naturally, there are writing courses, but writing has always come naturally for me, so it was not my direct course of study.

Q7. Growing up, what were your favorite books to read?

A. When I was really young, I was obsessed with the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. By middle school, I was into reading books by L.J. Smith (Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle) and some romance novels. By high school, I was fully into romance novels and even tackled Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series.

Q8. How did you get inspired to write a book?

A. My first novel was inspired by a high school crush of mine who told me, “Write a book about me.” I said, “Give me a character.” And the rest is history. That blossomed into a three-book series. Writing my first children’s book came about when an author friend of mine encouraged me to do it. I had an idea, found an illustrator, and now I’ve written four of them.

Q9. What hobbies do you have?

A. I have too many! I love to watch movies, read, write, see musicals and plays, travel, explore new foods, do crafts, and hang out with wonderful friends and family.

Q10. Do you have a favorite coffee shop?

A. There are a few that I frequent and enjoy very much. Near me, I like Java Plus, Tredwell, and the Village Grind the most. All of them are independent local businesses, and that’s important to me.

Q11. Where can people find you online?

A. Everything I do and write can be found on my website:. That has all my purchase links, newsletters, news happenings, events, and contact information. http://www.victoriajhyla.com/
